Michael Chuter

Chief Executive

Michael brings to Pump Aid a wealth of commercial and strategic experience, as well as a passion for social change through economic development. Prior to joining Pump Aid he was Director of Finance and Resources at the National Children’s Bureau and Head of Finance and Enterprise at the Foyer Federation. A Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, he spent 30 years in the retail and consumer sectors, including Gillette, Spillers, Hertz, Burton (now Arcadia), Evans and Episode.


Duncan Marsh

Director of Programmes

Duncan Marsh has worked in the development sector for 16 years in the UK and Southern Africa. He has worked for Action Aid, VSO, Care International and the Black Sash Trust.


Boston Mwense

Finance Manager

Boston is a Chartered Certified Accountant with more than 10 years of post-qualification experience in financial services, international development, the charity sector and auditing. He is an associate member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and a fellow of the Zambia Institute of Chartered Accountants. He has held senior finance roles at Refugee Action, Beanstalk, The British Council, the Zambia Revenue Authority, and other organisations.


Rae Goddard

Design and Communications Executive

Rae Goddard is a graphic design graduate from Central Saint Martins University in London, and has over 5 years experience in digital, branding, design, marketing and web development. Previously working full-time as a business development manager, alongside freelance illustration projects for creative agencies and brands like Department of Coffee and Social Affairs.


Chloe Brown

Fundraising and Administration Intern

Chloe is a recent Graduate in BA International Relations from the University of Exeter, and has joined the Fundraising team to provide support for the day to day running of the charity, researching new opportunities for community giving, registering payments as well as preparation for campaigns, appeals and supporting events.

 


Matt Bloomer

Partnerships Manager

Matt is responsible for writing bids and developing partnerships with Trusts and Foundations, Corporates and institutional funders to support Pump Aid’s work. Matt also provides account management to our current partners to ensure exceptional quality stewardship of all relationships. Prior to joining Pump Aid Matt worked in other business development and account management roles for WaterAid and St John Ambulance.


Emily Gait

Fundraising Coordinator

Emily coordinates the community and individual fundraising, campaigns and events for Pump Aid. She works with schools, faith groups, universities and other community groups to raise awareness of and support for Pump Aid through events and sponsored activities. Prior to working for Pump Aid Emily volunteered and worked for various environmental organisations including the National Trust, BTCV and Raleigh International.


Malawi Staff

Tiyese Zumu-Mwale

Country Director

Tiyese is responsible for the strategic direction, oversight and management for all the programmes in Malawi. He is also involved in the scoping of new projects and supporting the Country Director, the Head of Programs and the fundraising department. Previously Tiyese has worked with International NGOs and the UN in Africa, the Middle East and South Asia. He is a seasoned WASH Specialist with over 14 years of practical experience managing WASH programs in emergency, recovery and development.


Samuel Meya

Programme Manager

Sam manages Pump Aid’s core programme of providing remote and rural communities in Malawi with access to water. He has over 20 years experience working with NGOs, working on community based rural water supply and sanitation projects and has a professional background in Community Development. His areas of specialisation amongst others include water resource management, community facilitation and the management of school sanitation and hygiene promotion programmes.


Arlington Chadzuma

Community Development Coordinator

Arlington has over 18 years of experience working at grass root and district levels in the implementation and management of development programmes relating to public health promotion, social development, gender equality, HIV and AIDS. He has worked with several NGOs in WASH Projects such as Concern Universal, Willy and Partner Engineering Service (WPES), Cowater International Inc, Water Aid, Target National Relief and Development (TANARD).


Nellie Banda

Fundraising and Communications Officer

Nellie is responsible for raising the visibility and profile for the organisation through participatory engagements of the organisation at both international and local forums. She supports the program teams at field level logistically and coordinates the match funding reporting systems. Nellie has over six years work experience in the water sector both at national level with a World Bank funded project, governmental and as an intern while studying in Australia.

Trustees

Prof. Stefan Allesch-Taylor CBE

Chairman

Stefan is a London-based financier with more than 25 years of international experience. He has co-founded and/or served on the boards of companies in the property, industrial, medical, leisure, oil and gas exploration and production, technology, sports, retail, banking and financial services sectors. He also serves as a senior advisor to international trusts and high-profile business leaders.

As chairman of Pump Aid, he has been committed to advancing the charity’s mission to improve access to safe water and sanitation for poor rural communities in sub-Saharan Africa. He is also the co-founder of The Afri-CAN Café Charity, a social venture in Malawi and South Africa providing employment and training to the disadvantaged, and is the co-founder and Deputy Chairman of the London Rough Sleepers Committee, providing support for the homeless in Central London.

In 2016 he was appointed the first Professor in the Practice of Entrepreneurship at The Entrepreneurship Institute, King’s College, London. Stefan was appointed a Commander of the Order of The British Empire (‘CBE’) in the 2014 Queen’s New Year’s Honours List.


Megan Bingham-Walker

Trustee

Megan has been involved with Pump Aid as a volunteer, fundraiser and board member since 2003. She participated in the Pump Aid 2000 expedition to Zimbabwe and Mozambique and the Pump Aid Malawi expedition in 2004.  She is currently setting up a start-up technology company in London, having worked in the environmental efficiency sector for over a decade as an investor, management consultant and policy maker. Megan has an MA (hons) from Cambridge University.


Ben Nealon OBE

Trustee

Ben is an actor and has been involved in the organisation ever since 1998 when he met the three founders while filming in the Manicaland area of Zimbabwe. He served as Chair of Trustees until early 2011. He was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2012 Birthday Honours for services to Pump Aid.


Alan Duerden

Trustee

A former Financial Times journalist, Alan has over 13 years’ experience in the media and communications sector including roles at Thomson Reuters, a major multinational in the media and financial technology sector, running a PR agency in New York and senior appointments at PR agencies in the UK. For three years Alan ran his own communications business and his now an Associate Director of Ernst & Young LLP. He is a member of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations and the Public Relations Consultants Assoc.


Dave Waller

Trustee

Dave’s initial experience of the developing world came from 13 years working for Oxfam across a range of countries and intervention programmes. More recently he has worked for the Agency for Cooperation and Research in Development and the Knowledge Transfer Network. He is based in Malawi and is currently a Business Manager for CARE Malawi, part of CARE International. He holds a BSC in Geography from King’s College London and a Diploma in Computer Science from La Trobe University


Gerard Tyler

Trustee

Gerard is a Chartered Accountant and is currently Group Treasurer of Urenco Limited. For the previous seven years he was Group Treasurer at Severn Trent Water plc and, prior to that, he was a Treasury Consultant for the British Broadcasting Corporation. He has worked mainly in the UK, but also in Germany, and in addition to his corporate activities he served for eight years as a London borough councillor. He qualified with Ernst & Whinney and holds a BA (Hons) in Engineering Science and Economics from Oriel College, Oxford University.


Spencer Mahony

Trustee

From 2010 to 2016 Spencer worked at the British Embassy in Washington, D.C., where he was responsible for helping UK businesses export to the U.S. and attract US investment into the UK. From 2007 to 2010 he performed a similar role at the British Deputy High Commission in Mumbai, India and, prior to that he worked for the UK Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (formerly Department of Trade and Industry) in London. He is currently leading the international expansion of a DC technology start up that is unlocking government data to help level the playing field for organisations working with governments. 


Amy Gray

Trustee

Amy joined Pump Aid as a trustee in April 2015, and has over 15 years’ experience in programmes and monitoring and evaluation in the international development and humanitarian sectors. She is currently an M&E Advisor in the Secretariat at ActionAid International, and previously worked in progressively senior programme positions for the National Democratic Institute, ORBIS and Sense International.

Sally Sutton PhD

 

Dr. Sally Sutton is a rural water supply and sanitation specialist with 40 years practical and strategic experience in Africa and the Middle East. Recently she has worked primarily for the Water and Sanitation Program of the World Bank and UNICEF and for bilateral donors and host governments on policy development, project planning and evaluation. In the past decade her focus has been particularly on developing user investment in water supply (self-supply) with governments in six African countries.
