Defying the heatwave – running the 2018 British 10K for Pump Aid

This July the Pump Aid team had a fantastic time cheering on runners from our corporate friends as they battled through the heatwave to complete the British 10K in Westminster.

On the morning of Sunday 15th of July, our team waited anxiously in Trafalgar Square while four brave runners were doing their final warm ups before the sun run through Westminster.

This year we had a fantastic four runners representing two of our corporate friends: Rob from Advance TRS plus the terrific trio from Eileen Fisher (Linda, Sarah and Lizzy).

Here comes the sun and here comes the fun

With the heatwave in full swing, it was a swelteringly hot day in central London. This made completing the Virgin Sport British 10k all the more difficult, and the success of our runners all the more impressive!

Cheering is great fun, but also surprisingly challenging (not belittling the run, of course!) as we had to watch over 11,000 pairs of feet run, jog or walk past the halfway mark and finish line and pay special attention to spot and cheer our four brave runners.

Raising a sweat, funds and awareness for Pump Aid

Representing Advance TRS, a recruitment consultancy specialised in sourcing highly skilled professionals, was their Infrastructure Director Rob. With extensive experience in the water sector himself, Rob’s support for Pump Aid made an excellent match. Rob aimed to raise £100 running through the streets of London, and surpassed this goal to raise £170!  Head over to this blog post from Advance TRS to read more about Rob’s experience.

Swapping designer clothing for vibrant lycra leggings were Eileen Fisher store managers Lizzy, Sarah and Linda.  It was brilliant to partner with Eileen Fisher again after our collaboration during Earth Month.  They have also raised over £300 between them from their collective fundraising efforts to enable us to deliver our transformative programmes.

Picture perfect

While the heatwave is something we might wish to forget, here is a collage capturing memories from our cheer station and the happy smiles at the finish line.

Well done and thanks to all of our runners for braving that heat! The money raised from the British 10k for Pump Aid has gone toward helping Pump Aid break the cycle of water poverty, food insecurity and aid dependency. Together we are making a real difference to lives in across rural Malawi.
