My name is Margaret and I’ve recently joined the Pump Aid team as the Partnerships and New Business Manager.
Some people I meet these days seem surprised that I spent most of the last 20 years trading agricultural commodities for multinational corporations. I have been really lucky to have enjoyed the opportunity of building relationships with customers all over the world, as well as the privilege of visiting many of them. But along the road I have learnt that sometimes the real luck in life comes with choosing a new path. I am delighted that my new path lead me to Pump Aid.
One of the things I love about Pump Aid is how different it is from a lot of other charities. Our slogan “beyond water” really sums that up, as a big part of what we do is setting up financially sustainable micro-businesses: we train and mentor entrepreneurs and artisans enabling them to significantly improve their livelihoods, whilst supplying sustainable access to safe water, irrigation and sanitation facilities to their communities. It is such a great model for bringing genuine lasting change.
Many of the companies that we all know and love started life as small family businesses dependent upon some kind of support from outside to see them through the start-up phase. In Malawi, which is one of the poorest countries in the world, the obstacles are, of course, huge, and that kind of support is hard to come by. My job is helping to make sure that Pump Aid can be that support, bringing all the benefits of safe water and sanitation as we go.
So, my main focus at Pump Aid is building partnerships with companies, who recognise the value of what we are doing. There are lots of different ways that companies support us and perhaps you can help:
> Why not find out what your company does to support charities?
> Find out if the company you work for has a Charity Day or a Charity of the Year, or some other way of giving back.
> Could you nominate Pump Aid as one of the charities to be supported?
Introducing Pump Aid to your company charity team would be a fantastic way to help. Obviously we can give you any information you need, or even talk to them ourselves. If you would like to have a chat to find out more, please call me on 020 3727 4706.
