Over 5,000 Elephant Pumps built by Pump Aid

posted Friday, 25 September 2009

It has been ten years since Pump Aid built its first Elephant Pump in a remote village in Zimbabwe. Since then, we have built over 5,000 pumps in Zimbabwe, Malawi and Liberia.

These pumps have provided over 1.2 million people with access to clean water. The Elephant Pumps use an award winning design – an encased rope and washer pump, safeguarding the water source. They are constructed with materials sourced from within the communities. This makes them sustainable, durable and low in cost.

During the course of the last ten years we have also developed and built hundreds of Elephant Toilets which have provided many communities with access to safer sanitation. This has helped greatly decrease the number of people suffering from diseases such as cholera, typhoid and diarrhoea. We have also been successful in creating and nurturing nutrition gardens. These gardens contain fruit trees including avocado and apple. These provide food, income and hope to the communities.

We would like to say a big thank you to all of our sponsors, supporters and donors. We could not have been successful without your much appreciated generosity.
