Pump Aid wins st Andrews Prize for the second time

posted Monday, 18 August 2008

Pump Aid has won the prestigious St Andrews prize for the Elephant Toilet. The design was praised for its simple technology, basic use of local materials and easy installation.

In 2005 Pump Aid also won the St Andrews prize for its now renowned Elephant Pump, again commended for its innovative design and simple technology. Both designs were developed by Ian Thorpe, Tendai Mawunga and Amos Chitungo who all worked together in Zimbabwe as teachers in a rural school. They worked together to develop these sustanainable designs as a response to many of their pupils suffering from illness and a few dying through unclean drinking water and unhygienic sanitation areas.

Pump Aid was developed by these three teachers in 1998 and has expanded into a platform for effective, sustainable and efficient designs in the water and sanitation sector.
