Peace One Day
Peace Day, 21st September looks to engage all sectors of society, including governments, organisations of the United Nations (UN) , regional and non-governmental organisations and individuals in observance of 21st September as Peace Day.
Through the practical manifestation of non-violence and ceasefire in accordance with UN GA Resolution 55/282, this has enabled a day of peace. Countries such as Afghanistan, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Mongolia, Botswana and Malawi, to name just a few, are all participants of the day.
Pump Aid joined Peace Day in 2009, and marked the occasion in Liberia. Pump Aid partnered with the Initiative for the Development of Former Child Soldiers (IDFCS) to involve ex child-soldiers and local communities in Liberia in building and setting the foundations for an Elephant Pump. View our video below to see what we got up to.
For Peace Day 2010, Pump Aid will, once again, provide clean water and improved sanitation to rural communities in Africa. We aim to do this by working with our partners and communities on the ground in Malawi with a major focus on Women and Water. This is an issue that Pump Aid feels very strongly about as women and young girls are often burdened with the task of collecting water from distances up to 6 km a day. We want to use Peace Day to highlight water as a women’s issue but also as a children’s rights and educational issue too.
